Fire burns in northern Nebraska
A wildfire in northern Nebraska has burned more than 65 thousand acres.
The town of Norden was evacuated Friday due to the massive fire. Homes and other buildings have been damaged. Grand Island's Red Cross volunteers are on site to assist. Governor Heineman visited the area Saturday. "Sunday we'll be sending three Blackhawk helicopters equipped with bambi buckets to assist in putting out the fire," said Governor Dave Heineman. "I'm sending between 30 to 35 National Guard personnel to support local firefighters. We're going to try to do whatever we can. We've already got the state patrol up there, the Department of Roads, Nebraska Emergency Management, and the State Fire Marshall's office are all responding to the emergency." The fire is at zero percent containment as of Saturday. |
