Flashlights help GI students learn music

Students at one local elementary got a unique lesson in music class Tuesday. They used flashlights.

Not to make music, but to identify sections of the song.

Fourth and fifth graders at Englemen Elementary in Grand Island are learning about musical form.

Tuesday they were given flashlights with different colored lenses. The music teacher says she wanted to come up with a new way to engage students.

"Well, what's kind of neat about it is when they're little they just use an "A" and a "B" manipulative like a triangle and a square. As they get older, I've found that it's best to come up with creative ways to do it," said teacher Marti Sanchez.

Classes listened to "William Tell Overture" to break down the different sections.

Sanchez says the lesson was a hit.
