Flu virus takes hold in central Nebraska

Tools

A number of localized cases of the influenza virus have now been reported in Central Nebraska, with the region expected to see wide spread cases soon.

The Central District Health Department says about a dozen cases have been confirmed, but officials say the actual number is probably higher because many people don't get tested to confirm the illness.

The number of cases right now is unusually high with doctors normally seeing this many cases in late February or early March.

Flu symptoms include fever or feeling feverish with chills, a cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy note, muscle or body aches, headache and fatigue.

Influenza is a virus, which means it does not respond to antibiotics; however antiviral medicine is available to help reduce the severity of symptoms.
