Dine out and help battle child hunger in Hastings
Food 4 Thought is the backpack program that helps keep kids fed over the weekend. Marla Biggs spoke with News 5 about how you can help the Food 4 Thought program.
Chris: Let's start with the program first. What exactly is this? Marla: It is a program that goes throughout the elementary schools in Hastings talking about sending home food every weekend to sustain some kids that don't have food on the weekends. Chris: And this was important. Because they were getting fed breakfast at the schools. They were getting the school lunch program, but over the weekend some people were getting nothing, some of these kids, and this was a way to sort of fill that gap. Marla: Exactly. And so they were coming to school hungry on Monday morning. Chris: And it started as a Hastings College project from Hastings College students and they're still very involved in this. Marla: That's correct. It started in 2008 as a classroom adventure, I think. And then it has just grown. We now feed 63 families per weekend. Chris: Yeah, and that has grown quite a bit. Is it in all the elementary schools in Hastings? Marla: It will be in all the elementary schools in Hastings starting in January. We're in all of them except for one as of right now. Chris: And that growth needs some funding and a great way to do that is tomorrow night at Applebees. Marla: Exactly. Applebees has been very generous for us and has given 10% of your total bill to Food 4 Thought. So you need to eat there tomorrow night and feed your family! Chris: There you go. So all you have to do is eat and a portion of your bill helps Food 4 Thought. You do need to bring a flyer with you, though. Marla: Right, there is a flyer that says "Dine to Donate" at Applebees. It's throughout all the city, lot of locations have it. And then it will go home with all the kids in their mail today. Chris: So, find those as well. Make sure you get it so it's as easy as eating at Applebees, go there and help out some kids and stop hunger for kids with the Food 4 Thought program. |
