Ft. Calhoun power plant: "We let the industry down"

by KHAS-TV

Nebraska Watchdog is reporting the man in charge of the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant told the Nuclear Regulatory Committee, "We lost our edge; We let the industry down."

They also say Gary Gates also told the NRC that there's no timetable for restarting the plant.

Gates' comments come after several of the NRC's top officials met at the commission's headquarters outside Washington.

Nebraska Watchdog says at that meeting officials insisted that Fort Calhoun is safe. It's been shut down for 10 months now.

But for the first time they admitted that Fort Calhoun would have been shutdown even without the flood.

NRC's Region 4 Administrator, who oversees the Omaha reactor, said he's wondered "what's going on."
