Good Samaritan recognized for superior care
The American College of Surgeons recently recognized one central Nebraska hospital with the highest level of care a Nebraska hospital can receive.
Good Samaritan Hospital is unlike any hospital in Central Nebraska. The emergency room at Good Samaritan is the only hospital between Scottsbluff and Lincoln to be a level two trauma center, something the trauma coordinator is very proud of. "Our two highest injuries are often motor vehicle accidents and falls," said Trauma Nurse Coordinator Renae Jacobson. More than 350,000 people in Central Nebraska and northern Kansas rely on their trauma center. "Good Samaritan Hospital provided care for between 800-900 trauma patients last year during the year of 2011," Jacobson said. The American College of Surgeons recently re-verified the hospital trauma center as a level two, the highest level of trauma care available in the state. "Our critical access hospitals are very important to the care in the region," said Jacobson. Level two is also the second highest in the nation. "It's an ongoing process and improvement process through that whole time," Jacobson said. The trauma center is not only important to the community, but also a large stretch of I-80. "450 mile stretch of land between Scottsbluff and Lincoln is mostly rural so to be able to provide trauma care from the northern edge of Nebraska to the northern part of Kansas is very very important to the regions and to the whole communities in the state," said Jacobson. But what constitutes a level two trauma center? "Being a level two trauma center is having a wide range of specialists here at Good Samaritan not only does that help the trauma patient, but it helps really patients in the region," said Jacobson. As part of this, 120 physicians are employed at the hospital. "Many of our specialists are available 24/7 on call," Jacobson said. Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance. The ACS Committee recently spent two days in the trauma center evaluating the hospitals performance. Good Samaritan was just re-certified as a level two trauma center.
