Governor speaks out against GLBT discrimination law
Earlier this week Grand Island City Council member Larry Carney requested an expansion of the law protecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals from being discriminated against for jobs.
But, Governor Heineman isn't on the same page with Carney.
In Grand Island on Thursday, the Governor spoke out against the law.
Saying they should not give special rights to any one category in that regard.
Heineman added that adding sexual orientation as a protected class would hurt small businesses.
Both Lincoln and Omaha have seen similar proposals. The law passed in Omaha this past March. In Lincoln, opponents of the law gathered enough signatures to knock it down.
Grand Island City Attorney Bob Sivick will write the new law. It's due to be released to the public on Friday afternoon.
