Grand Island City Council approves raises for union workers

by Curt Casper

Tuesday night, the Grand Island city council approves a measure it said will help the city function more efficiently. It approved pay increases for city union workers 7–1.

The unions will see an increase of anywhere from 2 percent to 3 point 75 percent.

Non union workers will now also get more paid sick hours.

City officials said the raises were needed and in line with what other Nebraska cities are doing.

State law requires that the city acts annually on what we call salary appreciations. Which essentially provides the authority to pay the employees.

The board also voted to cut 7 city positions, like the library clerk.
4 different positions will be added.
