Grand Island City Council postpones “Pensiongate” until January
Grand Island City Council had to make four big decisions involving a pension snafu worth thousands of dollars. But, postponement was the key term at the meeting.
In regards to the possibility of seeking a remedy for the lost sum of payments to the latest Police department retiree Sergeant Kerry Cole, the council voted 6–2 to postpone a decision until a study session on January 15th. Regarding the three remaining decisions, Council members voted to postpone any further decision on the matters until after the study session on the 15th. This dealt with decisions on whether or not to pursue claims against other retirees. And, how to handle future benefits either on the basis of single life annuity or joint life annuity. Council members voted 6–2 to not approve the transfer of funds from the General fund to pay for the pensions. Council Member Chuck Haase brought the miscalculation to the attention of the council. He was not at Tuesday nights meeting. |
