Grand Island City Council set to vote on power plant project

The Grand Island City council is set to vote Tuesday night on a multi-million dollar purchase for the Platte Generating Station as part of new air emission standards.

All power plants are to comply with the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards by May 2015.

Grand Island received an extension for compliance until May 2016 because of the complexity of design and construction of the new equipment.

The $42 million upgrade needs to be approved by the council for the city to purchase the needed equipment.

"Instead of awarding different contracts for the engineering, the procurement, and the installation we're going to do everything under one contract so this contractor will have about 24 months in order to do the design, the procurement and installation of the system," said Grand Island Utilities Director Tim Luchsinger.

The new system will reduce mercury emissions by 90 percent and hydrogen chloride emissions by 83 percent.

If approved Tuesday night, the new equipment would be installed in October of 2014.
