Grand Island airport gets extension on tower shutdown

Tools

Small airports around the country are swallowing the latest impacts of the sequester cuts. The Federal Aviation Administration announced Friday that 149 control towers will be shut down in April.

The cuts represent a 60 percent reduction in FAA programming.

Good news. No Nebraska airports were on the list, despite concern that the Central Nebraska Regional Airport could be one affected.

While it is not scheduled close in April, the airport in Grand Island did make another list. It's one of 16 slated to shut down in September.

Air traffic controllers say pilots will now have to land their planes without an extra set of eyes on the tower.
