Grand Island approves power plant project

Grand Island City Council made a multi-million dollar decision Tuesday night: with an 8-0 vote the Council approved renovations that will help the Platte Generating Station comply with new air emission standards.

All power plants are to comply with the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards by May 2015.

Grand Island received an extension for compliance until May 2016 because of the complexity of design and construction of the new equipment.

The $42-million upgrade is being used to purchase the needed equipment.

"This size of a project, it takes years to put together and complete and regardless what may or may not come out of the court system, you have to start moving forward otherwise you find yourselves in a position where you're trying to catch up and meet a deadline and you may end up paying more then you would have had you properly planned," said Scott Dugan, Grand Island City Council.

The new equipment would be installed in October of 2014. The new system that will be built has a life span of 20 years.
