Grand Island attorney slams city pension committee
The debacle over the police pensions in Grand Island continued Tuesday night as the city attorney had some harsh words for the city's police pension committee.
Robert Sivick says the president of the local police union and the four officers who serve on the committee have entered, quote, "bizarro world." The superman reference was made during Tuesday night's city council meeting. Sivick says the police officers on the committee are looking out for their fellow officers, but that they also must respect the council's authority. "City council has the ultimate authority here, they have to separate that, the duty to respect the city council's decisions and their desire to take care of their fellow police officers," said Sivick. Last November, council member Chuck Haase discovered the city had been overpaying retired police officers since 2005 because it was using an incorrect formula. The city council voted in January to recalculate pre-84 pensions from gender neutral to gender specific. |
