Grand Island city council calls for pay increase
One week ago Tuesday Nebraska voters shot down a pay increase for state senators. Now, a Grand Island Councilman Larry Carney says its time for a raise for elected city officials.
Carney will officially resign next month. And while he won't benefit from the increase he says compensation hasn't changed for ten years. The ordinance would increase the Mayor's annual salary from $13,000 to $20,000, and council members from $6,000 to $10,000. "I think that the council is required today to do far more work in a lot of ways, understanding a lot more complex issues than it was entailed say 10 years ago," said Carney. If the ordinance passes, for the mayor the salary hike will take effect in the next mayoral term. For council members, it would start December 4th of 2012. Both the pay increase and the sexual orientation anti-discrimination law for city employees will be voted on at Tuesday night's city council meeting. |
