Grand Island City Council members will not be getting a pay raise; neither will the mayor. And he, Mayor Jay Vavricek, cast the deciding vote in the split council decision making the vote for a salary increase 5 "for," 6 "against."

Outgoing Council Member Larry Carney proposed what would have been the first pay increase in 10 years.

Some council members argued that a decade's a long time to go without a raise, and compensation isn't proportional to the amount of work they put in.

Other council members said it's the volunteer spirit that makes the job work (a few didn't know they'd even get paid for the position before elected) and that talk about a salary increase should take place during budget talks.

The proposal was to increase council members' salaries from $6.000 to $10,000 and the mayor's from $13,000 to $20,000.
