There are now three finalists for the Grand Island fire chief position.
The seat has been vacant for months, and you may know Mayor Jay Vavricek received a lot of criticism because of it.

It's caused controversy at City Hall.

The whole controversy surrounding hiring a fire chief started back in February when Fire Captain Scott Kuehl filed legal action against the city because of the vacancy.

In April, the city was ordered to name a fire chief or an interim.

Now, almost 8 months later, the search has been narrowed down to 3 candidates. They include Terry Flynn of Traverse City, Michigan, Patrick Kelly from Vero Beach, Florida, and Corey Schmidt of St. Paul, Nebraska.

During the initial hiring phase, we were told there were no qualified candidates inside the department.

But, since then that has changed.

Finalist Corey Schmidt is a fire captain with the Grand Island Fire Department.

Final interviews will be conducted by an advisory committee are scheduled for Monday, September 17th.

There's also a city council meeting tonight at 7:00.
