Grand Island fire department holds training session

Grand Island firefighters extinguished a house fire Friday. But it wasn't a normal 911 response.

This was a training simulation for some of the newest firefighters. The department burned down an old house on 8th street. This gives new firefighters an opportunity to learn in a controlled environment.

"What we'll do is we'll light it on fire, take the students in, sit them down, explain to them the whole evolution of fire and let them watch it grow through the different stages and then we'll allow them to extinguish the fire in a couple different methods that we teach," said Grand Island Fire Department Division Chief Tim Hiemer.

Hiemer says they try to do this three or four times a year.

But, this summer they were unable to because of extreme dry conditions from the drought.
