The local veteran affairs organization is making sure they take care of the homeless. They're holding an event called Stand Down.

The event is being held as part of a community-wide project called "Homeless Connect."

From 10:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m at the Evangelical Free Church the homeless in Grand Island can come in from the cold and receive a hot meal.

The VA Nebraska Western Iowa healthcare system will provide the free service for the homeless veterans .

Veterans can receive a health screening and limited free clothing.
Organizers say this is a way to give back.

"There is around 37 venders that will be, they're at E-Free. Anywhere from medical to dental. There will be legal aid, veterans services, anything that will the homeless and homeless vets," said Kelly Arends, Nebraska VA.

"Stand down" is a military term that means service numbers are removed from the combat to receive rest.
