Despite our recent weather, Spring is still weeks away. And, we still have some cold winter days ahead of us. Grand Island students are doing their part to keep youngsters in the area warm.

Thursday night the Grand Island Community Youth Council held a winter service project called "Put on Ice to Stomp Out Cold.

The goal of the project is to collect 750 hats, scarves, mittens, socks and other winter clothing.

The CYC has been working with both public and private schools to donate items to students from kindergarten to high school who need the items to stay warm.

"We wanted to do something to give back for our community and to work together so we came up with a service project. But we wanted it to be different than just a drive," said Heartland Lutheran senior Emma Krautzer.

You might be asking why some of the council members are wearing uniforms from Hall county inmates. It's a "jail and bail" event.

Community members were placed in jail and the CYC members had to come up with 90 items to bail them out.
