A Grand Island teacher got a big surprise Thursday morning - a $25,000 check for winning the Milken Educator Award. Sara Robinson is the only teacher in the state of Nebraska to receive the national honor.

Robinson has been a teacher for 10 years.

For the past six years she's taught fourth grade at Gates Elementary School.

The entire school of more than three hundred students gathered to honor Robinson, who is described as a "phenomenal classroom teacher that is passionate about her role."

Here's what Robinson says she plans to do with the money.

"I need a new car so this will help. We're also redoing our basement so the wheels are spinning in my mind as to what I can do with $25,000," said Robinson.

Just 40 teachers across the nation will be named 2012 Milken Educator recipients.

The program recognizes teachers and principals for exceptional educational talent, impacting students and exemplary educational accomplishments.
