Grand Island's Grand Theatre is putting away its projector for good.
It played the last reel this evening. The movie was Eat, Pray Love starring Julia Roberts.
In about two weeks, the theatre will go completely digital. The Grand Theatre Foundation says over the years they've noticed quality degradation in films. Plus, they said no one repairs film or copying equipment anymore.
Although they'll miss the nostalgia of the reel, foundation members say digital equipment will provide better sound and image. And it comes with 3–D capability. All at an affordable price.
"It's really about making affordable experiences for the citizens of Grand Island where you can bring a family of four, watch a movie and have concessions for under twenty dollars," said Craig Hand with the Grand Theatre Foundation.
"I guess that's the newest and best thing they got I don't know anything about it, yeah we like the old stuff," said patron Dick Green.
The Grand Theatre opened in 1937. The foundation is raising money to restore the façade and for other renovations. For more information visit www.grandmovietheatre.com.
