Chuck Hagel addressed pentagon employees Wednesday for the first time as Secretary of Defense.

Mr. Hagel told the pentagon staff that he is committed to being the kind of leader they and the country deserve.

Hagel also vowed to build and maintain strong relationships around the world and to use America's power wisely.

"Teamwork with allies. We renew old alliances, we reach out and find new alliances, based on the common interests of people. There will be differences and we have great power. And how we apply our power is particularly important. That engagement in the world should be done wisely," said Hagel.

Hagel was confirmed in the senate yesterday with a 58 to 41 vote. Only 4 of those approval votes were Republicans. One of those Republican yes votes was Nebraska Senator Mike Johanns; while Senator Deb Fischer voted no.
