Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee narrowly approved Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense. The vote came down just about an hour ago.

Hagel's nomination cleared the committee in a straight party line vote. No Republicans backed the former Nebraska GOP senator, that includes Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer.

A decorated Vietnam veteran who has come under fire on a range of issues relating to American foreign policy in the Middle East and elsewhere.

The controversial nomination now goes to the full Senate, which is expected to vote on the Hagel nomination this week, although some Republicans have threatened a filibuster.
