Hall County board votes on Elm Island Road closing
Land owners and several board members did not meet eye to eye this morning in Hall County. The Board of Supervisors voted against closing a stretch of Elm Island Road 6 to 1.
Two owners have land adjacent to Elm Island Road, just west of Highway 281. Each owner requested the closure in an effort to reduce vandalism, trespassing, and littering. The Platte River Whopping Crane Maintenance Trust maintains Elm Island Road. Supervisor Steve Shcuppan who chairs the Public Works Committee says it would be harder to reopen the public road once it's closed. "That road has been there for a hundred years and I don't see any reason to close it," said Shcuppan. "We've had buildings broken into, we've had spray paint, and constant littering always picking up trash, in my opinion there's no reason for anybody to be back there other than the two land owners," said Trevor Johnson. There's already a gate half way down the road, that gate will remain in place and locked. Johnson's attorney claims Elm Island Road has been the site of drinking parties and used as a "lovers lane." Land owners say if problems of vandalism and other issues continue, they'll be back for another meeting with the Hall County Board of Supervisors. |
