Hall County voters approve merging offices
Just under 800,000 Nebraska voters flooded the polls and made their decisions on important measures listed on ballots. Some cities and counties are ready to execute the next step including in Hall County.
LB-840, that economic development plan, was one of their biggest victories Tuesday night. Also, Grand Island city council will have some fresh faces on board. But, one issue voters said yes to will be a big money saver for Hall County. Almost sixty-eight percent of Hall County residents, voted in favor of merging the Register of Deeds and Assessors office while thirty-two percent voted against the consolidation. "Thanks to the voters because I think that they believed in the county board of supervisors and the fact that we have studied this issue and that we believe it'll in fact save dollars," said Hall County Board Chairman Pamela Lancaster. Seventy-five thousand dollars is expected in savings. But the merge won't happen overnight. "It takes about two years for all of this to take place," Lancaster said. Physically, the Register of Deeds office will remain here and the next 2014 elected official will decide how things operate which means the current Register of Deeds office holder Mitch Clark will no longer hold this office come 2015. "We back the voters and we have a great staff and we're just going to continue to do the good job that we have always done when the merger comes around in two years we'll make it work," said Register of Deeds Mitch Clark. One elected official will oversee the two offices and a deputy will be in each office. The 2014 primary ballot will determine who will be the next register of deeds/county assessor official. "At this point we're all working on supposition on how it would work," said County Assessor Jane Pelland. Out of 93 counties in the state, only 15 counties have a stand alone register of deeds. |
