Hastings City Council approves 9th Street development agreement
Despite three people speaking against the issue, Hastings City Council unanimously approved a development agreement with Hastings College. It has to do with the 9th Street closure project first brought up about 2 years ago.
The agreement Monday night does not close the street. It outlines what the obligations would be for the city and the college if an ordinance were approved. It says the college would have to compensate the city for the land, pay to relocate the utilities, and build parking stalls to replace those that would be lost. Mayor Vern Powers told News 5 Monday that if the city approves the 9th street project, the 12th street widening project must be completed first. Any decision on a closure isn't expected for another year or so. Also at Monday night's meeting, the council approved a motion allowing Crossroads Center Rescue Mission to increase its number of residents from 74 to 112. |
