Hastings City Council to address 9th Street closure

Hastings College is hoping to expand its Hazelrigg Student Union, plus make a portion of the 9th and Elm more pedestrian friendly.

Between the city and the school the project has been in the works for several years now. It would mean closing a portion or block of 9th street between Elm and Ash Avenue.

After the several years the project is still in its preliminary stages, but the item will be up for discussion Monday night at the city council meeting.

"This is just a developer's agreement to allow us and Hastings College to study what it will take to get utilities under the street. Paving the street east of Hastings College on 9th, to take care of problems, the street isn't finished. Also about doing some engineering work to see where parking spaces could go," said Mayor Vern Powers.

Tonight on News 5 at 10:00 we'll have the latest from what, if anything, is decided at tonight's council meeting.

If the city makes a final approval for the 9th street project, which could take another year or so, the 12th street widening project must be completed first.
