Grand Island Central Catholic boys basketball coach and Hastings College alumnus Bill Gavers has been named the new head basketball coach at Hastings College.

The college made the announcement Monday morning.

Gavers led the GICC basketball team to state championship in 2000
And the team won runner up in 2008. Gavers graduated from Hastings College in 1988. He replaces Lance Creech as head coach.

"Yeah, I think it's always been a vision and a dream of mine to come back to Hastings College and have the opportunity to lead the program. There's been a lot of great leaders of the program, you know, Doc Farrell, when I first got here was my first coach, then Coach Trader. And Coach Creech just got done giving 11 years of his life to make the program good. So, yeah, it's a special place," said Gavers.

Though coach Gavers will complete his teaching contract through May at GICC, he'll start recruiting players for the Hastings Broncos immediately.

The Broncos were 20-11 on the court this season which concluded last month.
