Hastings Knights of Columbus holds its annual Lent Fish Fry
Hundreds of Catholics in our area began the Lenten season today with Ash Wednesday Mass. That means no meat today and every Friday during the season.
One local group is providing another menu option. Tonight the Knights of Columbus in Hastings held its annual Fish Fry at Centennial Hall. They cooked nearly 200 pounds of fish. And for the price of eight dollars you could have all the fish you could eat. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting or abstinence. The fish fry is a big hit with the community. "In Centennial Hall here this is our 3rd year having a fish fry. We do have a fundraiser for different functions in the church. This year we are working on, we need some concrete work around the parish," said Tom Choquette, Knights of Columbus. The knights of Columbus will be holding the Fish Fry every Friday leaded up to Good Friday on March 29th. Ash Wednesday mass at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican marked the final public mass for Pope Benedict as the leader of the Catholic Church. The venue for the mass was moved to the basilica to make room for the larger crowd that was expected after Pope Benedict announced he is retiring on February 28th. A new pope is expected to be named sometime between march 15th and march 20th. |
