It was back to school for Hastings Public Thursday. This is the second year in a row HPS has started school a few days earlier.
But there are a few reasons why.

The system wants students to finish first semester before holiday break.

But another big factor for the early start, test assessment.

Superintendent of Hastings Public says the Board of Education set a new proficient level of ninety percent, higher than last years standard.
To help attain that goal the education system will be focused a different method of teaching.

"There's a difference between teaching the test and teaching to the test, we're going to teach to the test because we believe that our Nebraska standards and our district standards are what's important," said Superintendent Craig Kautz.
