Hastings community reacts to Sheehy's resignation
Reaction to former Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy's resignation may be no more raw and heartfelt than right here in Hastings, Sheehy's hometown and starting place of his political career.
News 5's Lauren Conley took to the streets of Hastings Saturday, to see how residents are reacting.
"Shocking, it just makes me sick because he is a leader," said former Hastings resident Judy Morgan.
Sheehy's resignation was followed by reports that he's been using his state issued cell phone to make late night phone calls to four different women.
"I'm sorry to hear it, however, we're all human and we make mistakes," said Hastings resident Micki Buscher.
News of Sheehy's resignation from office is spreading like wildfire.
While reactions are mixed, most people are looking for answers.
"It surprised me and I wondered right away, is it really true?" asked former resident and business owner Milan Franzen.
Franzen has known Sheehy for years and even worked with him back when he served on Hastings City Council.
"He was always straight and very level, and I thought very upstanding," Franzen said.
Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy's time in political office started right here in Hastings. With hopes of someday becoming Nebraska's Governor. Have those dreams been dashed?
"It's almost the kiss of death I think, if this all comes out as true," said Chris Haussler. "I don't see it as being something you can come back from."
"I want someone who I can trust, and is righteous, you know, and has integrity and has morals," Morgan said. "Obviously he doesn't.
"I would have no objection to his running at all and depending on who he was running against I would probably still vote for him," Franzen said.
Sheehy hasn't announced whether or not he'll still run for Governor in 2016.
"Well, they always say you shouldn't do anything you wouldn't want anyone else to know about, so I guess you have to take that into consideration when you do something," Harlow said.
