We are just over 1 week away from Thanksgiving and the Hastings Salvation Army is looking for your help whether it's cash, pies, salads, anything that would help with the annual Thanksgiving Dinner they put on every year for those who need help in the community. Major Abe Tamayo visited with News 5 about the event.

Amy West: Abe, this is something you put on every year. Are you seeing more response from the community this year?

Abe Tamayo: Well, we're seeing a good response from the community this year, but we're also down in certain areas. The retail businesses have been hit hard with the recession and other requests I'm sure. So we really need to focus on pies and salads to make our dinner a success.

Amy: Are you still looking for volunteers at all to come in?

Abe: We are looking for volunteers to come in. We'll be there at 6:00 in the morning and we'll probably wrap up things about 4:00 in the afternoon. So come in anytime between there. We're happy to put them to work.

Amy: As you're preparing for that big Thanksgiving feast, you are also going to make a stop in downtown Hastings tomorrow night for the Celebration of Lights.

Abe: We are. It's our annual kickoff for the red bell ringing campaign for our fund drive for Christmas 2012. We'll have a trailer there and we'll be selling walking tacos as part of our fundraiser so come on down and enjoy a taco.

Amy: A big announcement is going to be made. Any hints on that?

Abe: Well, it'll be made tomorrow evening during the Celebration of Lights what our annual goal is for 2012. So we anticipate a good turnout and, hopefully, a successful campaign.

Amy: Ok, and let's just remind people where all this money goes to because you make a donation now and it affects people all year long.

Abe: It really does. It helps people with rent, utilities, food, medical, transportation, after school programs for children (character development), programs for adults to help them become more fulfilled and self-sufficient. So it's an ongoing operation. Salvation Army this year celebrates 120 years in Adams County so we're very glad to be here. And we know we're only here because people care enough to support us to help us help others.
