Hastings Salvation Army invites you to give this holiday season
Christmas, it's getting closer and closer already and it's important to recognize the $175,000 goal of the Hastings Salvation Army this holiday season. Major Abe Tamayo visited with News 5 about the fund raising efforts.
Major Abe Tamayo: We're on our way. To date we've raised $25,000 - 14% of that goal.
Amy West: Fantastic! And where can people go to donate? Because it's not only the bell ringers right?
Abe: Right, it's much more than just the bell ringers. You can drop off a check or mail it to the Salvation Army, 400 S. Burlington, Hastings, NE.
Amy: Sounds good. And speaking of those bell ringers you need volunteers, you need more of them out there to help reach that goal.
Abe: We really do. If there's no one to stand the contributions aren't made. So we just need volunteers to come out, stand there and ring a bell, greet the public. We have beautiful weather right now and enjoy the bell ringing season.
Amy: What else can people do to get involved this holiday season?
Abe: There are many things they can do. They can conduct drives in their churches and their homes, their businesses to sponsor the Salvation Army for hams. Mary Lanning, for example, is now doing a ham drive, collecting hams for us to pass along to people in Christmas food boxes. So we appreciate Mary Lanning and the other people in the community that are doing such things and would like others to join in.
Amy: They did that last year, correct? And they bring in tons of hams.
Abe: They brought in a slew, they did, some 83 hams if I remember correctly which really was our "ham salvation," if you will, because we had no holiday meat. That was able to feed families for days after Christmas.
Amy: Let's talk about your angel tree at Wal-mart and the Imperial Mall. How do people support this?
Abe: You simply walk in, you'll see a tree with our angel in front of it and angel tags on the tree. Take a tag in the shape of an angel. It has a child's first name, profile, desired gifts, those types of things. Purchase that gift, attach the angel tag to it, and return it to the courtesy desk box and we'll pick it up and make sure the child receives that gift.
Amy: And these are things the children have specifically asked for or need.
Abe: They have or the parents have asked for those for their children and so those gifts will go to those children in need.
Amy: Lots of great ways to get involved this holiday season and give back to those who really need it.
