Hastings Salvation Army launches Christmas campaign

$175,000. It's a pretty ambitious goal, but that's what the Hastings Salvation Army has set as their Christmas goal for this year and Abe Tamayo joined News 5 to talk about the campaign.

Amy: Abe, tell us a little more about why this money is so important to people here.

Abe: It really is critical. It covers much more than the Christmas efforts of the Salvation Army - food boxes, toys and so on. It's part of our annual budget and empowers us to help people all year long to escape the poverty levels and things in life that hold them back and make them independent and self-sufficient. That's always our goal.

Amy: And one of these things you're throwing together tomorrow, a Thanksgiving dinner for up to 200 people is what you're expecting, correct?

Abe: We have had up to 350 in the past, but about 250-300 people. You're welcome to come on down. You don't have to be homeless, you don't have to be poor - maybe just a single person or a couple that don't have children at home anymore or along those lines. Anyone is welcome to come down and partake in the festivities and the good food.

Amy: And, of course, volunteers and salads are needed to pull this off.

Abe: We do need salads. We're short on salads this year so if you'd like to drop off a salad at our building today - 400 South Burlington - or bring it to the dinner itself we'll be there at 6:00 in the morning. So any time after that we can receive those or make a contribution so we can purchase those items as needed.

Amy: Fantastic. And we want to remind people that the phone number is 402-463-0429. And, also, where can they go for more information.

Abe: Well, they can stop by our office or check us out on Facebook.com/TSAHastings

Amy: And we want to remind people the dinner tomorrow is starting from 11:00 and going to 1:00 pm. You can bring your salads, your people, your family, your volunteer bodies, it'll be great.
