Jessica Soucie from TeamMates Mentoring program in Hastings spoke with News 5 Tuesday morning to talk about a fundraiser coming up in January.

Chris: First, let's talk about TeamMates - some of the history and what you do.

Jessica: TeamMates was founded in 1991 by Dr. Tom and Nancy Osborne and what we do is match a mentor in the community with a student grades 6-12. All in Hastings. And the mentor goes to the school one time a week and they do various things. They play games, build crafts together, some do book clubs. Our main goal is just to build a lasting relationship between the two and to add another caring adult to the student's life.

Chris: Great opportunity to provide a positive role model in lives that need them. The Husker connection - you talked about Dr. Osborne starting it. You've got a Husker connection coming up in the fundraiser as well. Let's talk a little bit about that.

Jessica: January 19th, Jason Peter is joining our fundraiser. He's going to do a program titled "Who mentored you?" He's going to give us a little background of his career with the Huskers, his relationship with Coach Osborne and a little bit of his life after the Huskers and where he stands today. The tickets are on sale now. It's $65 a person. You have to RSVP prior. And then we also have table rates and this year we are doing a special offer. If you only want to hear Jason speak you can join us in the balcony of the auditorium for $20 a person.

Chris: So, a lot of opportunities for that. That date again is January 19th, but those tickets are on sale. Let's talk a little about what those funds will be used for.

Jessica: We are completely non-profit. A lot of other chapters in Nebraska are supported by the school system. We do get a lot of opportunities with the schools, but we do fund everything ourselves. Each match costs approximately $500 so all of these funds go towards that and all of our operating funds. We do multiple activities outside of school so these funds all help that.

Chris: Great way to help youth. It's January 19th at the Hastings City Auditorium. Call 402-461-7631 for tickets.
