School bullying has turned into an epidemic. A report released by the U.S. Department of Education says 28 percent of all students say they were bulled at school.
But, the problem doesn't stop there.
Teachers and school administrators are dealing with cyber bullying.
Friday, the Hastings YWCA held a panel to try and shed some light on the topic.
The event was a bullying panel. It featured administrators from the Hastings and Adams Central school district along with a representative from Hastings College.
Members of the YWCA came up with the idea after learning how much of a hot topic this had become.
Officials from the schools explained their bullying procedures and discussed what move is next.
They also discussed one of the biggest problems with bullying - the internet.
Officials say social media makes it difficult for children to escape bullying. This open forum is a good way to put this topic front and center.
Officials also sued time today to try and figure out what the next step should be as we move forward. A 2009 survey says 9 out of 10 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students have experienced bullying in one year.
Tune into News 5 at 6:00 Monday night as we talk with victims of bullying in our own backyard and talk with local counselors about what causes bullying and the affects it can have on students.
It's a part of our special report "Making our kids Bully Proof."
