Hastings considers alcohol ordinance for green space

Tools

The City of Hastings is looking at whether or not it can allow alcohol in the green space just to the East of the City Auditorium. Council discussed the possibility at a work session Tuesday night.

Similar to the alcohol ordinance city council passed for downtown's Central Park it would be allowed during specific events with a special use permit.

The reason the alcohol issue is being brought up? The big "Do The Brew" beer and wine event.

Mayor Vern Powers says it's growing every year and moving outside is one option.

"We want anybody who wants to come to that event to be able to come to it. And we're almost to the point where we can't, and we're going to have to shut off attendance," said Powers.

If the ordinance were passed, alcohol wouldn't be used in the green space on a regular basis.

Mayor Powers says it would be very scarce.

City Council could vote on the issue as early as January.
