An early evening fire in Hastings has a couple of tenants looking for a different place to stay tonight.

Firefighters responded around 5:30 pm to this house at 2018 West Fifth Street. Hastings Fire Chief Kent Gilbert says the fire initially started in the basement.

And there was concern about the floor in the main room collapsing under too much weight.

"Basement fires are particularly hazardous to firefighters.
Sometimes the weight of multiple guys in there, they'll collapse.
So we were careful to avoid that on this home," said Kent Gilbert, Hastings Fire Chief.

The residents did make it out of the home okay. But a dog died in the fire.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
