Hastings utilties boosts water rate for treatment project
The Hastings City Council is expected to approve a 10-percent rate increase on water this winter, which will go to help remedy the rising levels of nitrates and uranium in drinking water.
The average customer uses about six units, which is about 700 gallons of water a month. The rate for six units will increase from $11.16 to $12.29, an increase of $1.13. With a multimillion dollar water treatment project in the works, Hastings Utilities Manger Marv Schultes says the increase is necessary. "The board wants to lead that a little bit to let the consumer know that's coming so that we don't all of a sudden face double or triple digit increases down the road," said Schultes. That water study is expected to be completed in January. At that point, the city and the board of public works will work together to come up with a plan of action to reduce the nitrates and uranium in the water. |
