Heineman approves Keystone XL pipeline route

It has been controversial from the beginning, but Tuesday, Governor Dave Heineman sent his official approval for the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline to Washington.

The governor sent this letter to the President and Secretary of State Tuesday morning giving his approval for the pipeline he says avoids the state's environmentally sensitive Sandhills region.

In the letter, Heineman say the 195-mile route through Nebraska avoid the Sandhills, but would still cross part of the Aquifer.

Heineman had previously stated he would oppose any pipeline route through the Sandhills.

"I knew at the end of the day you're going to make some people happy and some people unhappy, but you've got to make a decision. We've made our decision and again the final decision rests with the President of the United States," said Heineman.

When that decision will be made is not yet known, but the President has said he'd make his decision sometime in the first quarter of 2013.
