Heineman deems property taxes a local issue

While in Grand Island Tuesday afternoon, the governor spoke about his proposed plan to eliminate billions of dollars' worth of sales tax exemptions.

As we told you Monday, farming is one of the biggest industries that could be hit.

Farmers say they share the governor's interest in job creation and growth, but don't believe that's possible without some type of property tax relief.

The governor says property taxes are a local issue, not a state issue.

"If you want to lower property taxes in this state, you need to go talk to your local school board, your local city council and your local county board. That's where those taxes are determined, not by the governor, not by the legislature," said Heineman.

Both bills dealing with sales tax exemptions were introduced in the legislature Tuesday.
