High temps present dangers for elderly

With consecutive days of near triple digit heat, health officials say these temperatures are a danger for everyone including seniors.

During these prolonged heat spells, people's heat tolerance can go down and heat-related illnesses usually go up because of the buildup of heat in their homes and offices.

The elderly are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat because they have a limited ability to regulate their body temperature.

"They have problems adapting so it's harder for them to tolerate the heat, a lot of them have health issues that cause them to not tolerate the heat very well and a lot of them are on medications that do that same thing," said Sandy Stevens.

Health officials say it's important to check on seniors often.
They recommend either calling or stopping by two to three times a day to make sure they're okay.
