Holiday generates extra work for garbage collectors

Tools

Garbage collectors are trying to catch up a day off from Christmas. Which means, trash piles are double what they normally are during this time of the year.

The Grand Island Transfer site says the holiday tends to throw haulers off their normal routes and they're stuck playing catch up.
It makes it a busy week trying to get to every house.

"I would say 50 percent more somewhere in that neighborhood because each of the haulers here in town have their certain days of collection routes that they pick up any given day of the week so essentially they're just making up for that one day and one route they missed," said Solid Waste Superintendent Jeff Wattier.

One way to cut down on the trash is to recycle. And that includes your Christmas trees.

For Hastings, Chautauqua Park and the Duncan Field Parking lot are drop off sites.

Trees will be picked up starting today through January 25th.

In Grand Island the transfer station is a drop off site plus parking lots at Ace Hardware and Skagway south are drop off sites for live Christmas trees.
