Human trafficking remains big issue across country

Human trafficking is a hot topic across the state with it being brought up at the State Capital as part of a bill sponsored by Amanda McGill.
But it's certainly not just an issue here in Nebraska.

Federal authorities announced that they've uncovered what amounts to "modern day slavery" in a multi-state illegal sex trafficking ring.

Eight men and four women were indicted in U.S. district court in Savannah Thursday.

Dozens of others were also arrested.

"I am pleased to announce that federal agents with ICE Homeland Security Investigations were also able to rescue 11 victims. These 11 victims were allegedly prostituted for profit by members of the conspiracy," said U.S. Attorney Ed Tarver.

Prosecutors say the network lured women to the U.S. and forced them to work as prostitutes; many times performing up to 30 prostitution acts a day.

Prosecutors say they traded the women like slaves between cities in Georgia, Florida and North and South Carolina.
