Human trafficking resources made available to help victims
It's a topic that we've spoken about before here on News 5 - human trafficking. You may not think it goes on here in Nebraska but it does and Hastings Salvation Army Major Abe Tamayo stopped by to talk on this topic.
Abe Tamayo: As I shared a couple weeks ago at the advent of the understanding of the federal government and the Salvation Army in Hastings many, many provisions have been opened up. President Obama has put resources in place to combat this evil in our culture and society. And so we have many opportunities for people to receive Medicaid, reunification, relocation monies, those types of things are available through our case management to help people in that type of need. Amy: Are most people coming from places out of state or even out of the country? Abe: It may very well be the case. Many are trafficked through the corridors of I-80 and US 6. We also have an immigrating population from Mexico that maybe trafficked for labor and/or for sexual trafficking as well. We're not certain how many undocumented people are out there, but we just know we see the tip of the iceberg. So we're very concerned that that population is especially vulnerable.
