Johanns comments on Senate seat
He's spent half of his life working in politics and now U.S. Senator Johanns says he's ready to take a seat. After Johanns' surprising announcement Monday that he will not run for re-election, everyone's asking who is next?
Johanns told News 5 there are so many qualified candidates and any state senator or government official would be the perfect candidate. However, there is one particular name he raved about. News 5 caught up with U.S. Senator Mike Johanns in Chapman as he took a tour of the Preferred Popcorn Headquarters. As the former Secretary of Agriculture, Johanns showed up to support the facility's ongoing growth. But of course, the latest hype is all about Johanns' upcoming vacant seat and who would be the perfect fit to fill it. "You know my respect for Dave Heineman. I chose him as the Lt. Governor way back when. Could not have had a better person follow me as Governor he has attended to the affairs of the state, just such an outstanding manner," said Johanns. Johanns rejected the notion that he will not run for re-election due to heightened partisanship in the US Senate. But he's not happy with the latest budget cuts battle. "I sometimes wonder if the Obama administration is setting this up to do the things that will irritate people the most and then blame it on the political party that they don't like, the Republicans and I just think it's wrong," said Johanns. Johanns went onto say that if he were the Secretary of Agriculture he would never think about laying off or furloughing people who are responsible for food safety. Also, referring back to the speculation about Johanns not running again due to health concerns, he said four years ago he thought he had lung cancer. But after surgery, doctors determined it was not malignant. Johanns told me as of today he's in good health. |
