Nebraska U.S. Senator Mike Johanns says he will not run for re-election in 2014. The senator made the announcement in a joint letter with his wife Stephanie saying:

"With everything in life, there is a time and a season. At the end of this term, we will have been in public service over 32 years. Between the two of us, we have been on the ballot for primary and general elections 16 times and we have served in eight offices. It is time to close this chapter of our lives."

Johanns was elected to serve two terms as Governor for the state of Nebraska first in 1998 and then again in 2002.

He was elected a U.S. senator in 2008.

Governor Heineman released a statement regarding Johann's announcement saying:

"We are forever thankful for his commitment to serving our citizens, in
particular, our farmers and ranchers, and our veterans. Sally and I are both thankful and grateful to Senator Johanns and Stephanie for their service."
