Blighted and substandard, two words being discussed and voted on by the Juniata Village Board. At Thursdays meeting they talked about whether or not to move forward with the designation.

Addressing the board was Gothenburg City Attorney Michael Bacon.

His city underwent a similar move.

Bacon told them property taxes would not increase and money would all come from Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds.

Juniata is considering the designation for improvement projects in the community. The hope is with the funding the village could bring in new business and more residents.

“In order to do TIF or Tax Increment Financing, you have to be declared blighted and substandard. That’s an ugly two words because; no one thinks that they live in something blighted and substandard,” said Michael Bacon, Gothenburg City Attorney.

After a long meeting, the resolution passed with a 5-0 vote.
