Kearney data center project hangs on the edge
The Project Edge site in Kearney sits empty and it may stay that way for a while. New reports claim that the billion dollar mystery company chose a different location.
The race may not be over yet, but if it is that means the new jobs will go to another state. In fact, the Nebraska Watchdog is reporting that a Des Moines suburb is finalizing details with the unnamed company. But the city of Kearney isn't giving up hope just yet. "We really have not heard anything from the company that was looking at the Kearney site," said Kearney Mayor Stan Clouse. As rumors swirl, Project Edge, sits patiently waiting for a data center in Kearney. "Right now as has been taking place for the last two or three months we've just been on hold waiting for them to make their decision and they've not contacted us with a decision one way or the other," Clouse said. But the billion dollar company, rumored to be Facebook or Apple, may have already landed a new home in Iowa. "We really haven't talked to the company about that and we're not even sure what information is coming out of Iowa." However, the Nebraska Watchdog is reporting that the Des Moines suburb of Altoona is finalizing details with an unnamed company. "Everything that we've been told is that they are, the company is using their due diligence to assess all of their sites, whether it's here, Iowa, multiple places around the country, we don't know that, while they're looking. In our view they're using their due diligence and we provided them everything we can for the Kearney site." 165 acres are set aside for Project Edge. Picture this, warehouse buildings filled with computers bringing jobs to central NE. Sounds like a good idea but what if the billion dollar company already chose a different location? The city of Kearney spent about 2 million dollars for the site. "Some of it was state funded grants, some of it was local dollars." But Mayor Clouse says it won't go to waste. "I don't believe at all that the money have been wasted because we will have a data center at some point in time," said Clouse. Mayor Clouse says he doesn't have a time frame on when they will know the final decision made by the mystery company. He says depending on the nature of the business it could create a few positions to a number of jobs. |
