Kearney family loses home in fire
Crews are still working cleanup of a two story house fire north of Kearney Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were called around 5:30 am to the 7800 block of 5th Avenue regarding a smoking hot tub, but when they arrived to the scene, the entire house was fully engulfed in flames. Two adults and two children were in the home at the time of the fire - all four made it out safely. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early indications blame faulty wiring in that hot tub near the home. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in about forty-five minutes. "I mean, it was a large fire and all you can do is, we call it surround and drown, get lines on every side and just start soaking her down and eventually we get her knocked down," said Assistant Kearney Fire Chief Jim Tacha. Fire crews were initially concerned that the west end of the house would collapse into an adjacent metal building, but they were able to keep water pressure on that side of the house and forced it to collapse inwards. Crews from Amherst and Pleasanton were called to assist Kearney firefighters. The home is a total loss. |
